History

The area of Yerevan has been continuously populated since the Bronze Age. It was first settled by the Kura-Araxes culture. The kingdom of Urartu constructed a fortification here called Erebuni and later established the cities of Teishebaini and Vagharshapat nearby. Teishebaini was however razed by raiding Scythians. Vagharshapat however remained a critical religious center for the Armenian Church.

Armenia came to be occupied by many central Asian powers in the coming centuries. In Persian the city was called Iravân. In Russian, Erivan.
