Kuvendi

The Kuvendi is the national legislature of Albania.

Composition

The Kuvendi has 140 members. The country is divided into 12 multi-member constituencies, which each operate on a proportional representation party list system. Members serve a 4 year term, although the president can dissolve Parliament and call snap elections.

History

The earliest national legislature in Albania was the Assembly of Vlorë (Kuvendi i Vlorës), which established a National Council and authorized a Provisional Government.

After Hoxha died in 1985, Ramiz Alia led Albania into a reform era. He legalized opposition parties and organized elections for March 1991. Since then, a two-party system has emerged between the PS and the PD.
