Sultanate of Bagirmi

A group of tribal governments federated as the sultanate of Bagirmi in 1522. A national capital was quickly established in Massenya. For most of its history, the sultanate was a vassal of the Kanem-Borno Empire. It gained independence in the 18th century but in 1805 was conquered by the Wadai sultanate. Then in 1897 it was conquered by Rabih az-Zubayr.

The king of Bagirmi were sometimes titled as mbang.

There is a non-sovereign sultanate that claims descent from this state.


Sultanate of Bangassou

The sultanate of Bangassou was a slaver kingdom established around the Mbomou River in the 18th century. There is a non-sovereign sultanate that claims descent from this state.


French Equatorial Africa

The French quickly expanded from French Congo up the Ubangi and Chari river basins. This colony became known as Ubangi-Shari, and was a component of French Equatorial Africa.
